It is of the ultimate importance that we keep our body as healthy as possible. While most often when we think of health, we think of the usual suspects, when really we should start considering oral health as of major importance to our lives.

While you may not realize it, oral health and hygiene are some of the most serious aspects of our life. We all take for granted our teeth, and having them – but when you stop brushing and flossing regularly, you could end up developing gum disease. Gum disease is one of the diseases that a lot of our population suffers from, but don’t know it and don’t seek help. The other notable thing about gum disease is that it is curable, so it is important to spot it right away.

Gum disease occurs when you do not take care of your oral hygiene. It is not a myth that we should brush our teeth and floss as our daily routine, and twice a day at least! Brushing and flossing removes plaque and bacteria from our mouths. If left, the plaque slowly turns into tartar, which is much more tough to clean and can be detrimental. The mixture of the bacteria and plaque create sensitivity in the mouth and bleeding gums.

When your gums are infected and you don’t reverse your gum disease, you can lead yourself to have bigger issues and diseases, as your gums which have the bacteria and infection are very susceptible. They will absorb other bacteria that should not exist in the body, and send them around the system.

Basic oral hygiene works to maintain clean oral health and fight off all kinds of gum diseases and tooth decays. It is also important to not smoke or chew tobacco, as these will help prevent oral diseases. Tobacco use is known to cause health problems including oral, throat and lung cancer. Going to the dentist essential and one of the best things you can do for your hygiene, because they keep records of your oral health in more detail than you ever could at home.

Consult your doctor if you believe you are experiencing symptoms of gum disease. If you find your gums to be inflamed or bleeding, it is a good idea to seek immediate dental attention. Again, gum disease is reversible, but it does need to be caught earlier than later to not affect your overall health. Schedule an appointment.
